CO2 reduction supply chain Chiquita banana for Albert Heijn through use of barges
2019-10-16

Since 30 September, BCTN, the largest operator of inland container terminals in the Netherlands and Belgium, has been working together with Kloosterboer, a leading logistics service supplier for temperature-controller food products in Western Europe. Together they transport the Chiquita bananas after arrival by seagoing vessel in Vlissingen via the BCTN inland container terminal in Alblasserdam. After arriving at the terminal, the bananas are then transported further by truck to the Bakker Barendrecht distribution centre.

Currently, an average of 40 trucks drive directly from Kloosterboer Vlissingen to Bakker Barendrecht every week. The use of multimodal transport along this barge route is good for the environment as it translates into a CO2 reduction of more than 50% per container.
